Balut, Anyone?

After I paid for my Filipino goodies and while the hubs was picking lottery game cards, I saw the BALUT case so I asked him if he wanted to try. He replied with a resounding “no”. WUZZ :) .

The teen cashier informed me they’re new and very very delish(of course), and that the “sisiw” (duck embryo) is very small. I asked how much and she said only .89 cents each so I said, hey why not. I haven’t had Balut in years.

I’ve eaten BALUT when I was a kid living in the Philippines but never actually bought BALUT here in the US from the many times I’ve visited Filipino stores. If you’ve seen reality  shows like Fear Factor, Amazing Race, or Survivor, Balut had been used many times to scare contestants into eating this seemingly disgusting Asian delicacy.

The thought of duck embryo inside is disgusting, understandably. The truth is, it’s actually really good. I boiled them in water for about an hour.

The yolk is more substantial than the yolk of a regular egg. The liquid part with a pinch of salt is good as well especially when sucked right away upon opening the shell. The white part is tough though which is my least favorite part of Balut. I couldn’t convinced my husband to eat Balut. I even suggested I’d take the “sisiw” part out but he wouldn’t budge. Oh well, more for me. I ate two of them and the teenager was right, the sisiw were small.

Your recipes are quiet interesting, I plan to try some of them — BUT NOT THE BALUT! :)

By the way, I think your butterflies are very pretty — are they tatoos? — where did you get them? I would love to have one.
